Sir Giordus detains Corwyn in a tower until the new Earl has time to meet him. Corwyn realizes Justin is being held there as well. His cousin is relieved to see him. They talk about what happened, and Justin tells him it seemed as if someone else controlled him during the murder. Corwyn is sure that the murder resulted from dark sorcery used to control Justin’s actions. They try to find out who might have been the real culprit, and Justin mentions Malcolme Tamadrim, the Earl of Keeton’s third son, who seems to be capable of magic. Justin was part of Malcolme’s secret cabal in Aprenna—a group of noblemen having sex with other men. Malcolme and Justin had an affair, before they fell out with each other. Justin explains to Corwyn how to arrange a meeting with Malcolme in Aprenna. Despite the desolate situation, the meeting rekindles their feelings for each other.
